Spidcast S1 E8: Beyond the WorldTour Peloton – Champion Sarah Roy on the Reality of the Pro Grind and Shifting Gears

Performance is rarely a straight line. Behind every podium and pristine television broadcast is a lived reality of grit, setbacks, and relentless forward motion.

In Season 1, Episode 8 of the Spidcast, we sit down with someone who knows that reality better than anyone: Sarah Roy. After a massive 13-year career in the professional peloton, the 2021 Australian National Road Champion and Commonwealth Games bronze medalist has officially hung up her racing wheels.

At the Spid Werkz Foundation, our mission is to support the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls as they navigate the volatile journey of elite sport. To truly prepare them for that path, we have to look to the athletes who have already climbed to the summit. Sarah’s story is the blueprint of resilience. She didn’t follow a traditional pathway into the WorldTour; she carved it out herself.

In this episode, Sarah strips away the noise to talk about what it actually takes to survive and thrive at the highest level of cycling. We bypass the usual race recaps and dig into the raw elements of her career:

  • The Fight for the Start Line: Navigating severe early-career injuries, losing federation support, and racing local European criteriums just to afford groceries.
  • The WorldTour Reality: The stark contrast between the glamorous television coverage of the European classics and the isolated, high-pressure daily grind of a professional cyclist.
  • Driving Change: Her firsthand experience advocating for minimum wage and fighting for respect in a rapidly commercializing Women’s WorldTour.
  • Knowing When to Walk Away: The complex, emotional decision to step back from the sport after years of pushing her physiological limits.

Perhaps most importantly, Sarah discusses the concept of the “gap year”, stripping away the power meters, intervals, and team cars to rediscover her identity outside of a WorldTour jersey. Fresh off a 775-kilometer bikepacking adventure from Nice to Girona, she shares how it feels to simply be human again.

It is a pointed, honest, and incredibly inspiring conversation about knowing your worth and defining success on your own terms.
